📐 CHAPTER 11: CONIC SECTIONS

Subject: Mathematics | Class: XI | Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan

📖 INTRODUCTION

A conic section is the curve obtained by intersecting a right circular cone with a plane. The four basic conic sections are:

🔹 Types of Conic Sections:

  • Circle: When the plane is perpendicular to the axis of the cone
  • Parabola: When the plane is parallel to a generator of the cone
  • Ellipse: When the plane cuts the cone at an angle to the axis
  • Hyperbola: When the plane cuts both nappes of the cone

🔹 Eccentricity (e)

  • Circle: e = 0
  • Parabola: e = 1
  • Ellipse: 0 < e < 1
  • Hyperbola: e > 1

⭕ CIRCLE

A circle is the set of all points in a plane that are at a fixed distance (radius) from a fixed point (centre).

🔹 Standard Equation of a Circle:

(x - h)² + (y - k)² = r²

where (h, k) is the centre and r is the radius.

🔹 Special Cases:

  • Centre at origin: x² + y² = r²
  • General form: x² + y² + 2gx + 2fy + c = 0
  • Centre: (-g, -f)
  • Radius: r = √(g² + f² - c)

🔄 PARABOLA

A parabola is the set of all points in a plane that are equidistant from a fixed line (directrix) and a fixed point (focus).

🔹 Standard Equations of Parabola:

Equation Vertex Focus Directrix Axis Latus Rectum
y² = 4ax (0, 0) (a, 0) x = -a x-axis 4a
y² = -4ax (0, 0) (-a, 0) x = a x-axis 4a
x² = 4ay (0, 0) (0, a) y = -a y-axis 4a
x² = -4ay (0, 0) (0, -a) y = a y-axis 4a

🔹 Key Terms:

  • Focus: Fixed point (a, 0) or (0, a)
  • Directrix: Fixed line x = -a or y = -a
  • Vertex: Point where axis meets the parabola
  • Latus Rectum: Chord through focus perpendicular to axis, length = 4a

🟢 ELLIPSE

An ellipse is the set of all points in a plane such that the sum of distances from two fixed points (foci) is constant.

🔹 Standard Equations of Ellipse:

x²/a² + y²/b² = 1 (a > b, major axis along x-axis)

x²/b² + y²/a² = 1 (a > b, major axis along y-axis)

🔹 Key Terms:

  • Major axis: 2a
  • Minor axis: 2b
  • Foci: (±ae, 0) or (0, ±ae)
  • Eccentricity: e = √(1 - b²/a²)
  • Latus Rectum: 2b²/a
  • Vertices: (±a, 0) or (0, ±a)
  • c² = a² - b² (where c = ae)

🔶 HYPERBOLA

A hyperbola is the set of all points in a plane such that the difference of distances from two fixed points (foci) is constant.

🔹 Standard Equations of Hyperbola:

x²/a² - y²/b² = 1 (transverse axis along x-axis)

y²/a² - x²/b² = 1 (transverse axis along y-axis)

🔹 Key Terms:

  • Transverse axis: 2a
  • Conjugate axis: 2b
  • Foci: (±ae, 0) or (0, ±ae)
  • Eccentricity: e = √(1 + b²/a²)
  • Latus Rectum: 2b²/a
  • Vertices: (±a, 0) or (0, ±a)
  • c² = a² + b² (where c = ae)

🧠 ASSERTION & REASON QUESTIONS

Q26. Assertion (A): The conic section having the equation 2x² - 2y² - 5 = 0 is a circle.
Reason (R): The conic section having general equation Ax² + Cy² + Dx + Ey + F = 0 is a circle, if A = C.

Answer: (d) A is false but R is true.

Explanation: 2x² - 2y² = 5 ⇒ x² - y² = 5/2 is a hyperbola, not a circle.

Q27. Assertion (A): The point (1.5, 2) is inside the circle S: x² + y² - 5x - 4y = 0.
Reason (R): The point (x₁, y₁) is inside, on or outside the circle S₁ = x₁² + y₁² + 2gx₁ + 2fy₁ + c, according as S₁ < 0; or = 0; or > 0.

Answer: (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

Solution: S = 2.25 + 4 - 7.5 - 8 = -9.25 < 0 ⇒ inside

Q28. Assertion (A): The parabola x² + 6y = 0 opens upwards along y-axis.
Reason (R): When the axis of symmetry is along the X-axis, the parabola opens upwards.

Answer: (c) A is true but R is false.

Explanation: x² = -6y ⇒ Opens downwards along y-axis. R is false.

Q29. Assertion (A): The major axis of the ellipse 5x² + 9y² = 1 is along x-axis.
Reason (R): The major axis is along the x-axis if the coefficient of x² has the larger denominator.

Answer: (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

Solution: x²/(1/5) + y²/(1/9) = 1, 1/5 > 1/9 ⇒ major axis along x-axis

Q30. Assertion (A): Eccentricity of the hyperbola x² - y² = 1 is always less than 1.
Reason (R): For the hyperbola, a² = c² - b², and Eccentricity = c/a, so the eccentricity is always less than one.

Answer: (d) A is false but R is true.

Explanation: For hyperbola, e > 1 always. x² - y² = 1 ⇒ a = 1, b = 1 ⇒ e = √(1+1) = √2 > 1
