TIE-BREAK RULES — WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2024

2. Grandmaster (GM) Title

NORMS FOR GRANDMASTER (GM) TITLE

  • Rating Requirement: Must achieve a FIDE classical rating of 2500+ at any point.
  • GM Norms: Must earn 3 GM norms in FIDE-rated tournaments.
    • Performance Standard: Each norm requires a 2600+ performance rating over at least 9 rounds.
    • Opponent Criteria: Opponents with an average rating of 2380+, with at least one-third being Grandmasters and 50% holding FIDE titles (GM, IM, FM, etc.).
    • Must face at least two Grandmasters from different federations other than their own. In a 9-round tournament, you can play a maximum of 6 players from one federation and only 5 from your own federation to qualify for a norm.
    • Tournament Conditions: Norms must be earned in events following FIDE regulations (time control, arbiters, etc.).
