Key Plant Species, Botanical Traits & Ecosystems

Neelakurinji

Recently classified globally as Vulnerable by the IUCN. It is internationally famous for its strict 12-year mass blooming cycle.
IUCN Status: Vulnerable
  • Botanical Traits: A semelparous flowering shrub (meaning it flowers only once in its lifecycle and then dies completely). Grows to a height of 30–60 cm at alpine altitudes of 1,300–2,400 meters.
  • Taxonomy: Belongs to the genus Strobilanthes under the family Acanthaceae. It was originally named after the pristine Kunthi River in Kerala.
  • Geographical Distribution: Main concentrations reside in the Shola forests of the Western Ghats (specifically the Nilgiri Hills, Anamalai Hills, Agali Hills, and Eravikulam National Park). Isolated patches also occur in the Shevaroy Hills of the Eastern Ghats (Tamil Nadu) and Bellary (Karnataka).
  • Historical Note: Mass blooming events historically gave the Nilgiris its famous name, the "Blue Mountains". During its last major bloom in 2006, Kerala celebrated the "Year of Kurinji" with an official commemorative postal stamp.

Rosewood

CITES issued strict updated guidelines for the sustainable harvest and cross-border trade of rosewood timbers during its 27th Plants Committee meeting, alongside a Report on Rosewood Conservation & Trade.
CITES Listing: Appendix II (International trade is heavily regulated to prevent any risk of extinction). It covers critical genera including Dalbergia, Afzelia, Khaya, and Pterocarpus.
  • Taxonomy & Type: A premium tropical hardwood belonging to the Leguminosae (Fabaceae) family.
  • Native Range: Distributed widely across Southeast Asia, Papua New Guinea, Brazil, Africa, and Indonesia.
  • UPSC Context (2016): It is a key tree species found natively in parts of South India, occurring naturally within forest formations classified as "Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests".

Agarwood

India successfully defended its position and prevented the inclusion of its agarwood resources in the rigorous CITES Review of Significant Trade (RST).

- Agarwood Oil: 7,050 kg/year
  • Formation: A highly fragrant, dark, resinous heartwood. It forms uniquely when parent Aquilaria tree species get naturally infected by the specialized Phaeoacremonium mold.
  • Cultivation & Induction: Artificial resin induction is achievable via coordinated physical, chemical, or biological methods, typically optimized when trees reach 6–8 years of age. It is cultivated heavily across Northeast India, accounting for over 139.89 million plants.
  • Applications: High commercial value for high-end incense, luxury perfumes, and traditional medical interventions as an anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antioxidant agent.

Madagascar's Baobab Trees

A groundbreaking DNA study traced the evolutionary origin of all baobab lineages back to Madagascar approximately 21 million years ago, with seeds subsequently dispersing to Australia and mainland Africa via deep ocean currents.
  • Morphology: Popularly called "upside down" trees because their sparse, thick canopy structures closely resemble an uprooted plant turned completely upside down.

Oleander Flowers

  • Threats: Extremely vulnerable, with a global population of less than 100 mature individuals restricted to two small localities totaling under 100 square kilometers, where frequent mountain landslides and habitat destruction pose immediate extinction risks.
